World Chess Championship 1975

The 1975 World Chess Championship was never played due a dispute over the match format. Champion Bobby Fischer (USA) was to play Anatoly Karpov (Soviet Union) in Manila, commencing June 1, 1975.

Fischer refused to play the standard "Best of 24 games" match, instead asking for the old-style "First to win x games" format. As a compromise, FIDE offered a "Best of x games and must win y of them", but Fischer refused. FIDE agreed to a "First to win 10 games" criteria, but then Fischer demanded that he would retain the title if the score reached 9-9. FIDE did not concede this advantage. Fischer did not respond, so Karpov was named World Champion on April 3, 1975.

Candidates

The Candidates Tournament was played as knockout matches. The first round candidates' matches were the first to win three games, draws not counting. Later rounds were first to win four games. The final had a limit of 24 games, which Karpov won 3-2 with 19 draws, earning the right to challenge Fischer.
